Gerry's New Nano
« on: November 14, 2010, 05:50:06 PM »
Hi all.  That was fast.   laughing12

So.  My new Nano.

I purchased a JBJ Nano-Cube CF-Quad, Reef Series Biotype.  How's that for a handle?  laughing12

Specs.

28 US Gallons
Made of 1/4 in. glass with rounded corners
105 Watt Compact Flourescent lighting - 2 - 10K daylight and 2 - 7.100K actinic and 2 cooling fans
4 Nite Vue blue moonlights
2 Accela 266 gph pumps with an Ocean Pulse Wavemaker to control the 2 pumps

There is a slot in the back called an " Auxilliary Column "  Which JBJ suggests be used for their Skimmer.
They even have an ATO system for this thing.   rofl1

Got the stand with it as well because they threatened to charge me 50 dollars more than the sale price as it was a package deal.  I don't know if that is really saving or just not spending. laughing12 laughing12

Took me half an hour to build the stand and about 3 minutes to open the box with the tank.  It's all set up, light works, fans work, but no water in there yet.

I'll move everything over from the 33g and make some new water.

OK, I get the hint.  But I don't have any pics yet.

The ATO and the Skimmer are both upgrades, and will have to wait a while.  Audrey says I can't have everything, and I say WHY EVER NOT.

I'll take a pic tomorrow just for you Chris.  laughing12

Disregard my question on your other thread Gerry, I've gotten my answer! laughing12  Looking forward to the pictures tomorrow.  I can't wait to hear if you like this or not, I'm not quite in the market yet, but I have been thinking about one for upstairs in the dining or possibly living room, I know maybe I should get one for both rooms... ;D

This new tank cost $399.99 on sale at Big Als in Ottawa.  This may be a special for Canada only, but I don't know for sure.

What attracted me to it was the ease that it could be set up and running, along with the cost.  The cube tank that I was looking at was much cheaper initial cost but with all the "EXTRAS" would add up to considerably more.

The fact that they were specifically designed for salt water with the slot for a skimmer, and a skimmer being built by JBJ was another factor.  The other AIO's are very limiting.  This one also has readymade options for lighting in that they have one with an HQI and another with LEDs.  So really prepared for us saltys.  ;D
I also think that I could adapt my existing HQI to this tank as their HQI has the same cover with the same reflector, just different bulbs and sockets.

Anyway, NOT TONIGHT.

Gerry,

Please stop it!  Every time you get another tank, it makes me want to get another one as well.  Then I mention it to my wife and she starts calling me all kinds of names (most of which would get blocked by the site's filters).  Then I spend a few nights sleeping on the couch.

You're ruining my marriage!   :o

The NEW NANO.  thumbsup1

With just the lights it seems very blue.  I'm sure that water and a few colourful thingys will change that somewhat.  ;D

No, the hammer is not to do work on the tank.  It helped with the stand.  laughing12

More pics to come, naturally.

That picture is with the regular lights.  With the blue moons it's even bluer (more blue?).  :-\

Got it about half full of water now.  I didn't realize how much rock fits into a 33g tank.  I don't know where to put it as I drain the old tank.   laughing12

Should I use the old sand and if so should I do something with it, such as wash it again?  Or would I be better to just move it and try to save some of the life in it?  It seems to be clean enough, it hasn't been in the 33 for very long.  :-\

Gotta get moving. Don't want to lose my VERY live rock.

Sorry about that, rayn.  Wives can be DIFFICULT to say the least.  laughing12  I guess that goes for all spouses of the opposite persuasion.  rofl1 rofl1

So, all the water's in, the rock from the 33g,  (some of it ) and the pumps are gurgling away.  It's still a bit muddy, but will clear up over night and I will take my first FTS.  thumbsup1  At least I know it's not New York Mud.  laughing12 rofl1 laughing12

So what's next?  I suppose, some more corals, but what about fish.?  I would really like to see a small shoal of Anthias in there, but they are kind of expensive for a shoal.  Maybe four Lyre tails or Sunrise.  That would be neat, but costly.  No, I don't even think about a Tang.  Seems that they are more trouble than they are worth.

More thinking needed.  rofl1

Got the water cleared up quite nicely.  I think that's enough rock.  Don't want to overfill this one too.  laughing12

The Xenia I have on this large piece of rock has taken over the right half and seems to be leaving the left half for me.  This is a non pulsing type and is not very interesting.  ::)

Now need some taller thingys in there.  I want things that are simple to look after.  Don't want to have to spot feed them.  Just pour in the food, and let them fend for themselves.  laughing12

You may not be able to fit alot of rock in there, but at least that large piece is very interesting looking......I like how it is sort of mushroom shaped.

Any idea so far for the other coral types?

Gerry,

How about a Kenya Tree?  They are relatively easy and grow nice and tall.

Jerry, I saw a Kenya Tree for the first time today.  BA's have it at $54.00. Seems kind of expensive, to me, for a leather.  But yes, you are right, it will grow tall.  I already have 2 leathers in there so what might be their reaction to a new one?   :-\

Chris, that piece of rock has now been in each of my tanks, except the Pico of course.  I think now it has found a home.  thumbsup1  It is my most travelled piece.

Michael, I tried to buy a couple of colourful shrimp today, but everyone says " Wait a while, we might have a special on."  Since I need about 6-8 for all of my tanks maybe that is a good idea - specially since right now they are 25 to 39 dollars each.   "OUCH"

I did buy a nice Zoo colony today.  Deep green with the potential to grow larger.  I now have 6 small frags of Zoos but most of them do not seem to want to grow to any size.  Nice colours but you need my mag visor to see them.   :'(

I also bought some kind of a  "--pora".  I have a good memory, but it is rather short so I will have to ask my LFS again.  It is going to be tall like the Bird's Nest, and covered in fine green polyps.  8)

I keep seeing all these coloured thingys but am still leary of buying more until I gain more experience.  :-[  But I think something in a purple would look nice.   laughing12 rofl1 laughing12

Forgot to mention earlier.  I went to BA's today to order the skimmer for the New Nano.  They could order it and would be in in about a week.

Good thing that I checked their process.  The skimmer that they would supply would be the one that JBJ is discontinuing.  JBJ has designed and built a new one and these old ones have been sold off as scrap.  frustrated12

CHECK YOUR ORDER BEFORE YOU SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE. :o

Gerry,

I picked up a Kenya Tree frag at Fish Tail (I know it's not your favourite place) a few weeks ago for $10.  It actually had 2 "trees" growing on the rock.  They aren't all that colourful, but I like the looks anyway.

I like how it turned out Gerry.  Now your making me miss my old 29 that I sold.  I do definitely like the look of the cube better though.
