Palting's 150 gal white elephant
« on: January 03, 2011, 11:30:25 PM »
Been reading this part of the forum, and I was a little hesitant to post my tank. That's 'cuz everyone else's looks so grand! But, I've decided the only way I'll learn is my showing it , warts and all, and listening to the advice and comments of others. So, here goes.

I started a 11o gal tank in March, then moved everything to a 150 gal in May this year. So, I don't know if the system inception date should be March or May. Anyhow, it's a 110 gal RR with dual corner overflows, 72"x27x18. There is 2" sandbed, about 120 lbs rock, 2 koralia evo 750's at the sides, and 2 koralia evo 1050's at the middle back. Lighting is with 3 150W 15K MH, 8 T5 actinics, and 6 moonlights.

The system is serviced by a 20 gal refugium with macro, liverock, and 4" sandbed, and @ 30 gal sump with filter towers, 300g skimmer, a GFO reactor.

Tank Incept 3/2010, 150 RR, 30g sump, 20g fuge, 150w 14K MH x3, T5 actinics x8, moonlight LED x6, 1400gph return, Koralia 750 x2, 1400 x2, 300 g skimmer, GFO rctr, 4 tangs, 2 mandarins, 2 perc, 6 line, CBA, 2 firefish, assorted SPS, some LPS, zoas, palys, shrooms, clam

is it 27" w or tall?  what kind of skimmer are you running?

It's 72" wide (left to right), 27" tall (vertical height), and 18" deep (front to back), for a total 150 gal. I use a Marineland 300 skimmer. The skimmer section of the sump has a constant depth of only 5" or so. This kinda limited my in-sump skimmer choices, and this is one of the few skimmers that work well at that depth.

Thanks for the compliments and reassurances. I still feel humbled when I see all those gorgeous tanks posted here. I hope to get this tank to somewhere close to those. Maybe someday :). I'll post some livestock pics a little later. My kids have given the fish names, LOL!

There's actually a story about how the fish got named. My first fish was a blue damsel. Big mistake. he believed he owned the tank, and not only bullied, but actually would nip at the other fish. I was raised during the Popeye generation. So, naturally, I called him Brutus. My kids, NOT of the Popeye generation, thought I was calling him a Roman name, so they named the clowns Romulus and Remus. Brutus got deported back to the lfs.

Romulus, the shy, hiding:

Remus, the show-off pansy:

Great looking tank, but I'd remove those mushrooms- they will take over your tank.

Thanks, Chris. Still feeling my way, but man, those pics on the competition are good looking!

I heard about the mushrooms after I already had them, Ashlar. I do hope they cover that corner. Trick I guess is to confine them afterwards. Kalk paste is good to kill the errant ones, or even aptasia X, I heard.

Here's a closer view of the 'shrooms. They are competing with that Xenia, and I think the Xenia is losing. That's good!

They have a nasty habit of just 'letting go' and floating around the tank until they find another spot they like.

I sooooo wish I'd never added a single shroom or palythoa.

Black sand, they say, takes a little more care to keep clean. So far, all I have to do is stir up the surface with each water change, and that seems to keep it black. Fingers crossed!

Here's another pic.

Call me MISTER Butthead! Actually, it's Proteus, for purple.

Here's a group shot, taken just before feeding, with the beggars converging :).

LOL!. Thanks, guys. Maybe I WILL put the group shot in the contest.

Here's one pic that I did enter in the contest. One of my CUC, a member of what my kids collectively call the Roman Legion. They gave up on giving individual names to my CUC  :D
